| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description When Nikki Giovanni's poems first emerged from the Black Rights Movement in the late 1960s, she immediately took a place among the most celebrated and controversial poets of the era. Finally, here is the first compilation of Nikki Giovanni's poetry. It is the testimony of a life's work from one of the commanding voices to grace America's political and poetic landscape at the end of the twentieth century. From the revolutionary "The Great Pax Whitie" and "Poem for Aretha" to the sublime "Ego Tripping" and the tender "My House," these 150 mind-speaking, truth-telling poems are at once powerful yet sensual, angry yet affirming. Arranged chronologically, they reflect the changes Giovanni has endured as a Black woman, lover, mother, teacher, and poet. Here is the evocation of a nation's past and present -- intensely personal and fiercely political -- from one of our most compassionate, outspoken observers.

Happily, Maya Angelou isn't the only Black female to grace modern poetry's stage. Nikki Giovanni speaks with a voice informed by her multiple roles as Black woman, lover, mother, teacher, and poet. This collection of 150 poems is arranged chronologically and covers her work from 1968 to the present. Who knows? Maybe the next president will ask Giovanni to compose his inaugural poem! Be sure to check out two other compelling collections: "And Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou and "Selected Poems" by Rita Dove, America's Poet Laureate

Through a mandatory school project, I was introduced to one of the most prolific and true-to-life literary legends. Giovanni's work is the purest translation of real life into written word that I have ever read. Easily one of my favorite writers
Love Poems by Nikki Giovanni February 4, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've never really been into poetry, but decided to "broaden my horizons." I enjoyed this work very much. It was so real; so fresh; so true to me. I had always heard about Nikki Giovanni's writing, and now I'm sold...on her and on poetry.
not a good collection September 21, 2001 adead_poet@hotmail.com (Beaumont, tx USA) 2 out of 17 found this review helpful
to be fair, i never really expected much out of giovanni, i just grabbed this book from the library on a whim. if you want to read a poet who write political poems or poems on race, then grab marilyn nelson, gwendolyn brooks, sapphire or ai, and see how it should be done.
